It’s a tall tree, over 50 feet high, with large, beautiful flowers and broad leaves that remain green year-round. Throughout human history the tree has been admired for its beauty as well as its nurturing qualities.
In ancient China the 7th Century heroine Mulan took her name from its flower. In Japan the tree signified nobility and the love of nature. Many cultures still use its flowers today for bridal bouquets, believing they convey perseverance as well as feminine elegance.
The tree and its flower were given the name Magnolia.
Fossils from the Magnolia family have been found in Mendoza that date back 65 million years. Many botanists believe it was our planet’s earliest flowering plant. Between ten and twenty million years ago, Magnolia trees stood witness to the entire creation of the Andes mountain range, all the while playing a key role in the evolution of Argentina’s diverse ecosystem.
